The Grand American Road Racing Association (Grand-Am) was established in 1999 to return stability to major league sports car road racing in North America. As the organization begins its ninth season of competition in 2008, Grand-Am is universally regarded as one of the world’s most competitive racing organizations. Grand-Am is located in Daytona Beach, Fla., on the same corporate campus that’s home to NASCAR, International Speedway Corporation and Daytona International Speedway, but Grand-Am operates as a stand-alone company. Grand-Am addressed the uncertainty that marked sports car racing in the 1990s with sensible and affordable rules and a firm commitment to a level playing field. Its top-tier championship is the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve. The Rolex Series Daytona Prototype (DP) category attracts superstar drivers and world-renowned teams and has revolutionized sports car racing with plentiful battles up front and close finishes in virtually every race. And in the manner that the DP class has redefined prototype racing, so has the Rolex Series GT class, reserved for high-performance, production-based sports cars such as the Mazda RX-8, Porsche GT3, Chevy Corvette, Pontiac GXP.R, Ferrari, Maserati and BMW. There are two additional series that Grand-Am sanctions – the KONI Challenge Series and the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda. The KONI Challenge Series showcases the latest in high-performance sports cars, coupes and sedans that are straight from the showroom floor, with major modifications permitted only in the area of safety. Cars typically campaigned range from Audi, BMW and Chevrolet to Porsche, Pontiac and Mazda.
